Healthy Steps for Older Adults 50+

The Healthy Steps for Older Adults Program is an evidenced based falls risk reduction program for adults age 50 and over. It was developed by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging because falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospital stays and loss of independence for older adults. The Healthy Steps workshop addresses many common causes of falls such as environmental safety, balance, strength, flexibility, and endurance, the importance of proper nutrition, foot health, sensory deficits (hearing/vision, side effects of medication, the need to maintain an active lifestyle, social connectedness, and mental and spiritual well being. You will learn exercises to improve your balance and will be given a fitness assessment. Each workshop lasts 4 hours with a break for lunch. Each workshop is led by trained facilitators.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers

Caregiving involves many challenges. Too often, caregivers neglect their own health and well being, and put their own needs second. This often results in caregivers becoming “burned out”, depressed or physically ill themselves. Powerful Tools for Caregivers is a six week course, taught by two program leaders. Participants meet for 1.5 hours each week.  Tools that are learned include: reducing personal stress, communicating feelings and needs, setting limits asking for help, dealing with emotions, how to make tough decisions, and dealing with difficult situations.
